We’ve covered famous #BarreBosses and celebrity Yogis, now it’s time for Pilates to shine! Here’s 10 celebrities who have practiced, and/or swear by a Pilates workout:
1. Lady Gaga
Along with practicing Yoga for over 16 years, pop superstar Lady Gaga often turns to the Reformer to maintain her core strength and flexibility. In addition to the benefits for her intense performances, the singer also suffers from Fibromyalgia; the low impact nature of Pilates can be particularly helpful for easing back into fitness after flare ups.
2. Sylvester Stallone
We bet you didn’t see this one coming… but it’s true! The now 76-year-old actor, famous for his portrayal of boxer Rocky Balboa, has even claimed that he finds Pilates much more challenging than any of his prior fitness training!
“I've lifted weights I have boxed, wrestled, Track and field, played football and many other sports… But this workout pushes you to the limit… And beyond!”
3. Cameron Diaz
Cameron Diaz does Pilates on the daily! The Charlie’s Angels actress prefers a Mat Pilates workout, in combination with cardio and weight training. Now 50, the actress says:
“The more I work on my body at this age, the better it gets. I feel so much more attractive now. A thousand percent. I’m appreciating my skin and my wrinkles and all those things”
4. Lucy Liu
Like her Charlie’s Angels co-star Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu is also a lover of Pilates. The actress does her own stunts, so being fit and strong is especially important to her. However, unlike Diaz, Liu is a fan of the Reformer machine, citing its natural resistance which helps keep her muscles engaged whilst working. She credits Pilates for improving her posture and helping her achieve a lean, toned appearance.
5. LeBron James
Ever wonder what athletes such as LeBron James get up to off the court, and outside of their respective seasons? Well, the basketball champion is secretly (well, not-so-secretly… ;) a lover of Pilates! He credits the low-impact workout for maintaining his stamina and flexibility on the court, stating that he is able to play for more than 40 minutes without fatiguing.
6. P!nk
If you’ve ever watched P!nk perform at one of her dazzling concerts (I personally have had the pleasure of seeing her twice!) you’ll know she manages to flip, fly and fall from some serious heights, all while delivering powerhouse vocals! How? Pilates of course!
Whilst on tour, the singer works out 3 times a DAY (one of those times being her 2-hour long concerts), and if you thought she takes a break when back home, you’re sorely mistaken. P!nk still exercises on the daily, alternating between Pilates for toning her muscles, cardio HIIT for stamina and endurance, yoga, weight training and more. In fact, there probably isn’t a workout she hasn’t tried!
7. Kate Hudson
Another actress on our list, Kate Hudson is never shy about sharing her workouts to social media, Pilates being her go-to. You can catch videos of her rocking the Reformer and crushing it on the Cadillac (a machine you don’t see many celebs using these days!) on Instagram and TikTok. Beyond the studio, Hudson is also the co-founder of popular activewear brand, Fabletics.
8. David Beckham
LeBron James isn’t the only athlete to turn to Pilates, with soccer superstar David Beckham having also used the low-impact exercise to increase the longevity of his career. He was introduced to the practice in 2009 when on loan to AC Milan. AC Milan requires all their players participate in the workout, and Beckham quickly became a fan.
“I do an hour of Pilates a day. It is fantastic and fitness-wise I am the best I have been for a long time”.
Now beyond his time as a professional athlete, it is unclear whether he still practices, but it was certainly an important part of his routine during the prime of his career.
9. Reese Witherspoon
Remember when actress Reese Witherspoon posted for the 15th anniversary of her iconic film Legally Blonde? She replicated the image of Elle Woods on a pool float in a sparkly pink bikini… actually the same bikini she wore 15 years ago! The actress credits her practice of Yoga and Pilates for maintaining her fitness over the years, with the help of her personal trainers of course.
10. Miley Cyrus
In addition to her long-time practice of Ashtanga Yoga, singer-actress Miley Cyrus is a big fan of Pilates. She took up her Pilates practice in 2013 and has never looked back, at one point even practicing every day! Cyrus now has a home-studio after she grew tired of the Paparazzi following her to group studio classes (thankfully something we never have to worry about!).
